THE SALZKAMMERGUT
“The Salzkammergut is one of the most scenic parts of the Alps”, it said in the Meyers Encyclopaedia as early as 1888. But it is not only the towering mountains, the inviting valleys and the 76 or so lakes which turn your holiday, vacation or long weekend here into a very special experience. It is also the history of this region, which carries the white gold in its name and where once decisions of global political significance were made. It’s no coincidence that a part of the Salzkammergut has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
These days, there are people here from near and far who are writing the finest chapters of their personal (family) history. Whether they are hiking, biking or skiing, enjoying the art and culture or the many other things to do, so many of which can be found in the Salzkammergut. When you come to the Moserwirt in the Dachstein-Salzkammergut holiday region, you are at the centre of things wherever you are!
SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN
If you come to the Moserwirt for your holiday, the experience starts the moment you reach our front door. The almost limitless variety of options means that you can choose what you want to do yourself and not have to fit in to whatever’s on the list.
For example, hiking on one of the nearby peaks. Mountain biking on one of the many well-marked routes. Swimming in one of the 76 or so lakes. If you fancy something a bit less like sporty, you can go up the mountains in a cable car. Or take the cog railway up the Schafberg. You might want to go on a walk to some happy romantic places and discover castles, ruins or palaces. There are special experiences to be had at Hallstatt in the “Salzwelten” exhibition salt mine, but also in the numerous caves nearby. Particularly spectacular are the Mammut Cave and the Ice Cave.
Whatever you are looking for, at the Moserwirt we would be happy to show you the way!
WINTER
When winter decks out the Salzkammergut with flakes of white snow, it develops its own very special appeal. The mountain peaks are mirrored in the sheer stillness of the lakes. The valleys, with their white carpets spread along the paths, compete for the attention of walkers and snowshoe hikers.
During Advent there is the lure of nature’s stillness and the harmonious melodies from the numerous Christmas markets. You can prepare your soul for Christmas in the company of St Nikolaus and Krampus.
But of course in the Salzkammergut it’s also possible to do something a little more connected with sports. For example, in the nearby ski area Dachstein West, where you will find 142 kilometres of slopes prepared to perfection. At Krippenstein, the free riders take it to the limit, while the cross-country skiers do their kilometres on the romantic Goiserer Höhenloipe or in Gosau. And if you want to swap your skis for a toboggan, you can go to the (night) tobogganing in the Trockentann, where you can sip a cup of “Jagatee” in an old-fashioned lodge before you leave.
CULTURE
Culture in the Salzkammergut region can look back on a 7000 year-long history. Along with the skills they used for mining salt, the Celts also had their creative sides and there are examples of this to be admired in Hallstatt and other places in the area. Today, people come from far and wide to enjoy the culture in the Salzkammergut or even to become an active part of it.
You can look forward to the Lehár Festival in Bad Ischl, or to concerts up and down the country. Or to museums and exhibitions. To music festivals for the young and young at heart, or old traditions for those who are looking for the real thing. Real things such as the wildness of the carnival which bears some strange fruit in the Salzkammergut and more than once conjures up a smile on your face.
SPORT
Doing sports is an obvious way to have some recreational fun in the Salzkammergut.
In winter, skiers and free riders really get their money’s worth in the Dachstein West ski region. All the many mountains in the region are just waiting for anyone who wants to go ski touring, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and snowshoe hiking.
In summer the Salzkammergut also provides an arena for sports which is every bit as attractive. Hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, swimming, diving, mountain biking, e-biking, running, golfing, paragliding, canyoning, rubber boating and much more besides. There’s almost no limit to what you can do.
And there is one more choice which is open to you: and that is whether you want to be alone and go your own way or be well organised with outdoor professionals who will go with you on your sporting adventures and show you places that you would probably never get to see on your own.
